A One-Mile Town With a Long History

Indialantic is about a mile on each side, and many of the homes asking for impact windows here were built long before anyone sold laminated glass. Kouwenhoven, who settled the area, built the first wooden bridge to Melbourne around 1919 to 1921. A drawbridge replaced it in the 1940s, and the current elevated causeway arrived in 1985. The town incorporated in 1952 under the name Indialantic-By-The-Sea, and the 2020 census counted 3,010 residents and 1,586 housing units on about one square mile of land.

Older cottages, newer rebuilds

Indialantic's streets mix small block and frame homes from the mid-twentieth century with larger houses built on the same lots more recently. In an older home we usually find aluminum awning or jalousie windows in masonry openings, sometimes with wood trim that has suffered from salt and rain. The new impact frame needs solid anchorage, so we remove the old window completely and repair any damaged buck before installing.

Rebuilt homes often have more glass and taller openings. They also tend to have a statement front entry with sidelites and a transom.

The front door question

This is the page where we talk about entry doors, because so many Indialantic owners ask about them. A front door is the one opening you use every day, and many older homes still have a wood or steel door that was never tested for wind or debris. An impact front door is tested as a complete unit: slab, frame, glass, hinges and locking hardware together. Multi-point locks that latch at the top and bottom as well as the middle are common on impact doors and help the door stay put under pressure.

Fiberglass and aluminum are the common choices near the beach because they handle salt and humidity better than wood. If you want a wood look, fiberglass with a wood-grain finish is available. Decorative glass inserts and sidelites can be impact-rated as well, so you do not have to give up light at the entry.

Elevation matters

Indialantic sits about 13 feet above sea level. Door thresholds and window sills on the low side of a house take the brunt of wind-driven rain, so we pay attention to sill pans and sealing at grade-level doors.

A1A traffic and noise

Route A1A runs through the middle of town, and homes near it hear a steady stream of traffic, especially on weekends. Laminated impact glass is noticeably quieter than the single-pane aluminum windows found in many older Indialantic homes. Pairing the new windows with a sealed impact front door makes the biggest difference, since an old door with worn weatherstripping lets in sound and humid air along with the wind. We can also add a laminated transom above the door for light without a weak spot.

Indialantic Questions

Can I get an impact front door with glass in it?

Yes. Impact front doors can include impact-rated glass inserts, sidelites and transoms. The whole assembly is tested together.

Is fiberglass better than wood near the beach?

For most beachside homes, yes. Fiberglass resists salt, humidity and swelling better than wood, and it can be ordered with a wood-grain finish.

Do you replace the frame or just the door?

For an impact rating, the door and frame are replaced together as one tested unit. We remove the old frame and set the new one into a sound opening.
